The Managing Director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Adeseyi Sijuwade, has tasked all Nigerians not to leave the fight against corruption to law makers and anti-graft agencies alone.
The Managing Director represented by the Director Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Aminu Gusau, made the charge at the swearing-in ceremony of five new members of the Anti-Corruption Monitoring and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of NRC in Lagos. He said that no organization would be able to sustain any kind of development if the level of corruption was high.
Mr. Sijuade said he hoped that the event would enable members of ACTU bring up policies to control corrupt acts in the organization.
He advised the new members to take their responsibilities seriously, and uplift the organization by enlightening members of staff about the dangers of corruption in the corporation. He promised the full support of the NRC to the new members.
Head, Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Department (CMED) of ICPC, Mr. Akeem Lawal, who represented the Chairman of ICPC, in his goodwill message, urged the new ACTU members and all staff of NRC to see public office as the greatest means of serving humanity because any act of corruption a public officer engages in affects the society in one way or the other.
Mr. Lawal said that the expectation of the ICPC was that the strategic liaison which the ACTU of the NRC would provide should make her a trusted partner in achieving the goal of an ethically sound and reliable service delivery organization.
He, therefore, urged the new members to set the bar of integrity and honour high and must not use their position to witch-hunt or victimize persons within their organization.
Mr. Lawal asked for the co-operation of all staff of the NRC by reporting activities and issues within the organization that require the attention and intervention of the unit while on its part, the ACTU must ensure the confidentiality of such information and the identities of the complainants.
In her acceptance speech the chairperson of ACTU, Mrs. Omotayo, gave assurance of their full cooperation with ICPC, adding that the unit would act as a tool to check and make sure that all of its activities align with the objectives of NRC.
She promised to work diligently and add value to the NRC, and also maintain the trust reposed in them.
