The President of Students Anti-Corruption Club (SAC) of the New Christian Power Centre School, Dawaki, Miss Elizabeth John, has charged parents to encourage their wards to shun corruption in all its ramifications.
Miss John, who is sixteen years old and a Senior Secondary Three student, gave the charge during an anti-corruption sensitization visit by officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to the school recently.
She said that some parents encourage corrupt behavior in their children by aiding and abetting examination malpractice, while noting that in such cases corruption usually starts from home. The SAC President declared that corruption was wrong and destructive to society. She therefore, opined that fighting it should start from the home as well.
Earlier in her remarks, the leader of the visitors, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua of the Education Department of the Commission, harped on the benefits of good home training for children and the consequences of lack of such. She said: “Children are first taught positive values such as respect for elders, telling the truth and being contented by parents at home. However, negative values also start from home when children are exposed to lying, cheating and other vices by members of the family.”
Mrs. Ogugua urged the students to resist corruption, and play the role of peer educators by spreading the anti-corruption messages to their friends and family members.
SAC is one of the intervention platforms of ICPC for tackling the scourge of corruption in secondary schools across the country. It is set up to recruit students in secondary schools as crusaders in the fight against corruption. The club teaches its members positive values, self-pride, respect for constituted authorities and above all integrity.
