The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has expressed his commitment to working closely with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) to tackle corruption in Nigeria.
Dr. Aliyu made this known on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NIALS, Prof. Abdulqadir Ibrahim Abikan, and his team at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, the ICPC Chairman highlighted one of the major challenges faced by government agency executives – the persistent pressure from the public -, which often creates opportunities for corruption.
The ICPC Chairman who emphasized the need for collaboration between ICPC and NIALS to research the legal implications of this issue, proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the existing partnership between the two institutions.
In his remarks, Prof. Abdulqadir stated that the purpose of the visit was to explore potential areas of collaboration, particularly in research and capacity-building.
The NIALS boss acknowledged the warm reception from the ICPC Chairman and his team and expressed enthusiasm about working together to enhance governance and accountability.
As a research institute, NIALS provides training for various government agencies, including judicial officers, procurement staff, and military personnel.
Prof. Abdulqadir stressed the importance of partnering with ICPC’s research department to study the Commission’s ongoing cases, which could improve its effectiveness.
He also proposed organizing training sessions for ICPC prosecutors and legal teams to enhance their capacity to handle corruption-related cases.
This collaboration between ICPC and NIALS is expected to bolster anti-corruption efforts through research, legal analysis, and capacity-building initiatives.
