In a significant move to restore trust in Nigeria’s public sector, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has partnered with Accountability Lab to promote integrity and celebrate honest public servants through the Integrity Icon Nigeria initiative.
During the partnership’s Review session at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, ICPC spokesperson Mr. Demola Bakare, fsi, stressed that the fight against corruption goes beyond enforcement noting, “It’s about showing Nigerians that integrity is possible and already exists within our systems. We just need to find, amplify, and support it,”.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Friday Odeh, Country Director of Accountability Lab, reflected on challenges faced in previous editions of the initiative, adding that some nominees initially doubted the campaign’s authenticity, believing it to be fraudulent due to the absence of financial incentives.
He, however, said that once the legitimacy of the programme was confirmed, skepticism gave way to pride stressing that, to date, the campaign has recognised 38 Integrity Icons across key sectors such as education, security, health, and the judiciary, challenging the widespread notion that corruption is endemic in the public service.
Looking ahead, Mr. Odeh announced that the organisers plan to build a network of past awardees who will mentor others, advocate for reforms, and serve as living proof that integrity holds intrinsic value—even without financial rewards.
According to him, beyond the awards, the initiative also aims to reshape how Nigerians perceive integrity through diverse channels such as podcasts, documentaries, media partnerships, and art-based storytelling in schools, “the goal is to integrate discussions on ethical governance into everyday life” he added.
While the issue of financial incentives remains a topic of debate, both ICPC and Accountability Lab believe that meaningful recognition and compelling storytelling can be more impactful than monetary rewards. They view the partnership as a strong indication of a renewed national commitment to transparency and accountability, with hopes that the movement will inspire more stories of integrity and foster lasting positive change across the country.
For over eight years, Integrity Icon Nigeria, led by Accountability Lab, has celebrated unsung heroes—public officials who reject bribes, stand against corruption, and carry out their duties with dedication and honesty.
This partnership signals a revitalised national effort to recognise and elevate public servants who embody transparency and accountability in their roles.
