Embracing Ethical Public Duty: An Address by the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commissioner

Kano State Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Ahmed Muhammad Wada, has called on public servants to embrace ethical and professional responsibility as the bedrock of their official conduct.

Commissioner Wada, who was represented by Chief Superintendent Barr. Ibrahim Garba of the ICPC’s Legal Services Department, Kano State Office, made the call recently during the inauguration of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) at Federal Government College, Kano.

Addressing the newly inaugurated unit, Barr. Garba, on behalf of Commissioner Wada, charged its members to treat the occasion as a pivotal turning point, one that would ensure the college conducts its affairs with greater accountability and transparency. He emphasised that the unit serves as a key implementation mechanism for the ICPC’s corruption prevention mandate, thereby providing a holistic framework in the fight against corruption.

Earlier, the principal of the College, Hafsat Adebayo, welcomed the initiative, noting that the determination of the anti-corruption authorities to establish ACTUs at the grassroots level, beginning in schools, is a step in the right direction.

“This move will go a long way in nipping corruption and related offences in the bud at various levels of society,” she said. Mrs Adebayo further assured that the inauguration of the unit at the college would not become just another government project. Instead, she pledged that it would keep the college administration, staff, and students on their toes—mindful always of doing what is right.

Speaking on behalf of the ACTU, Dr Dawah Iliyasu Sodangi, a member of the unit, described the inauguration as both a call to duty and a solemn responsibility to build and safeguard the integrity of their institution. He noted that the sessions clarified various practices now viewed as corrupt and outlined practical steps to guard against them, thereby equipping the unit to act as the college’s ethical compass.
