The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has inaugurated the new Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) members of the Centre for Energy Research and Training, Zaria (CERT).
The Director of the Centre, Dr Yusuf A. Ahmed represented by the Head of Health Physics and Radiation Protection Department, Professor D. J. Adeyemo, in his welcome address commended the effort of ICPC in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Professor Adeyemo who was the pioneer ACTU Chairman of the Centre stressed the need for the Commission to ensure the independence of ACTUs in MDAs, this he said, would empower them to function effectively. He assured ICPC that the management of the Centre is ever ready to support the Unit discharge its responsibilities.
The Zonal Commissioner in charge of North-West Zone of the Commission, Mr. Shehu Yahaya fsi, who was represented by Mr. Mahdi M. Lawal (an Assistant Commissioner) pointed out that, ”as insiders, ACTU members are in better position to help in the fight against the menace called corruption, since they know more about the functions and operations of their respective organisations”.
Mr. Mahdi charged the newly inaugurated members to assist the Centre effectively and efficiently carry out its responsibilities in the most transparent and accountable manner.
In his vote of thanks, the incoming ACTU Chairman, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Gamawa appreciated the Management of the Centre for finding him and other members worthy to serve the country in such capacity.
He stated that, “the task ahead is enormous and challenging”. But, assured ICPC and the Centre that with required support, the Unit under his leadership would discharge its functions diligently.
