Explanatory Memorandum
The Act seeks to prohibit and prescribe punishment for corrupt practices and other related offences. It establishes an INDEPENDENT CORRUPT PRACTICES AND OTHER RELATED OFFENCES COMMISSION, vesting it with the responsibilities of investigation and prosecution of offenders thereof.
Provision has also been made for the protection of anybody who gives information to the commission in respect of an offence committed or likely to be committed by any other person.
Corruption is a global problem and apart from national efforts, there are international laws and protocols to combat the malaise. Prominent amongst which are African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption and United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). Nigeria is a state party to these two laws or protocols.
